History of BMO Global Asset Management

BMO Financial Group launched its first mutual fund in 1972, which marked its early entry into asset management. The firm that would grow into BMO Global Asset Management started a decade later, in 1982, as RMN Investment Counsel Inc.

From independent firm to BMO subsidiary

Burns Fry Ltd. acquired RMN Investment Counsel in 1991. Three years later, Burns Fry merged with Nesbitt Thomson, and the firm became part of BMO Financial Group.

The firm ran as Jones Heward Investment Counsel Inc. within BMO Financial Group. It launched an ETF business in 2009. Jones Heward was then renamed BMO Asset Management Inc. in 2010, after joining with BMO’s ETF and quantitative investments groups under one entity. The BMO Global Asset Management brand followed in 2011.

Global expansion and a return to Canada

BMO Global Asset Management opened its EMEA operations in London in 2015. Two years later, BMO Financial Group marked 200 years in business, and BMO GAM restructured its investment teams around global capability groups.

That global chapter closed in 2021. BMO Financial Group completed the sale of the EMEA business to Ameriprise Financial Inc. on November 8, 2021.

The move let the firm direct more resources toward its North American wealth management operations. BMO GAM also launched its first alternative investment product that year.

BMO Global Asset Management’s recent milestones

Bill Bamber became CEO in 2023. That same year, BMO GAM brought its first structured note-based mutual fund to market. BMO Financial Group also completed its US$16.3 billion acquisition of Bank of the West in 2023, which added to its North American reach.

In November 2025, Benefits and Pensions Monitor (BPM) published a feature on BMO GAM’s work with Indigenous nations to build long-term investment governance and wealth frameworks. The firm received the Institutional Connect Reconciliation with Indigenous People Award that same month.

The company also works with Indigenous nations on long-term investment governance and wealth management. Its strategic relationships team focuses on governance frameworks for communities holding land settlement capital.
