Vanguard Investments Canada is a low-cost investment fund manager that operates across all Canadian provinces. Its equity, fixed income, and asset allocation strategies serve pension plans, institutional investors, and plan sponsors across the country.
The firm’s parent, The Vanguard Group, was founded in Pennsylvania in 1975 by John C. Bogle, a Princeton graduate. It was built on the principle that a fund company should serve its investors, not outside shareholders.
A year later, Vanguard launched the First Index Investment Trust, the first index fund for individual investors. Industry critics dismissed the move as “un-American,” but the firm grew and expanded to global markets, including Canada.
Vanguard Investments Canada began operations in 2011 with six ETFs listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX). In 2012, the firm added VFV, its S&P 500 Index ETF, to build out its Canadian product range.
By 2013, the firm had reached $1 billion in Canadian ETF assets and $9 billion across 29 ETFs by 2016. It launched its first actively managed strategies that same year.
In 2018, Vanguard Investments Canada moved into the mutual fund space with four new funds and three asset-allocation ETFs. The asset-allocation ETFs gave investors a single product with a mix of global and Canadian equity exposure.
In 2020, the firm launched a single-ticket income ETF for investors seeking a simplified income option. In 2021, the firm added two more mutual funds to further broaden its product range.
In 2024, the firm launched VVSG, an ultra-short Canadian bond index ETF, to expand its fixed income range. That year, Sal D’Angelo, Vanguard Canada’s head of product, discussed Canadian investor home bias in a Benefits and Pensions Monitor piece.
Vanguard’s Asset Allocation ETFs had grown to over $13 billion since their 2018 launch, the piece noted. In 2025, Vanguard Investments Canada added four Asset Allocation Mutual Funds to extend that all-in-one approach into mutual fund format.
