WestJet Reaches tentative deal with aircraft engineers

The WestJet Group, in collaboration with the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), has announced a tentative agreement on their first collective bargaining agreement.

This marks a significant milestone for both parties, highlighting a forward movement in their negotiations.

Diederik Pen, president of WestJet Airlines and group chief operating officer, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, noting it as “industry-leading within Canada.”

He emphasized that the agreement acknowledges the essential contributions of the Aircraft Maintenance Engineers, positioning them as the highest paid in their field across Canada.

Pen highlighted the agreement's benefits, which include industry-leading work-life balance standards and robust job security commitments.

Pen also remarked on the timely nature of the deal, which helps avert any potential work stoppage and ensures no disruptions to passenger travel plans. “We are grateful to have arrived at a deal, averting a work stoppage and any impact to our guests' valued travel plans,” Pen said.

He thanked WestJet's customers for their patience during the negotiations and assured continued dedication to delivering friendly, reliable, and affordable air service.

On the union side, Will Abbott, AMFA National Region II director and chair, reflected on the negotiation process, describing it as challenging but ultimately successful.

“After nine months of tough negotiating, we are proud to have reached a tentative agreement that will now be presented, through the ratification process, to the hard-working Aircraft Maintenance Engineers and other Technical Operations employees,” Abbott stated.

He praised the team's commitment to maintaining a top-tier culture of safety for the WestJet Group.

The agreement now awaits a ratification vote by the union membership, a critical next step in finalizing the terms and solidifying the partnership between WestJet and its Aircraft Maintenance Engineers.

Both parties anticipate a positive outcome that will support continued growth and stability within the company.
