Rising Pressure: What’s Weighing on Canada’s Pension Industry?

Date: Tuesday, December 5, 2023

Canadian pension plans are contending with an abundance of challenges – many of which have been building for years, while others have arisen in the short-term – from higher interest rates and global geopolitical shocks, to domestic pressures impacting both financial and non-financial factors for institutional investments. Managing risks to longevity and ensuring that pension assets are sufficient to meet fiduciary duties to retirees remains at the forefront, even amid pressure to address pressing challenges in the nearer term.

In this webinar, CIBC Mellon’s Darlene Claes-McKinnon and Michael Graham will preview key findings and trends from CIBC Mellon’s latest study of leading Canadian pension funds. Our speakers will also provide practical industry insights and examples. Together, they will explore the considerations, risks, and most importantly, opportunities available as plans position and protect their organizations for the future.

While the depth of concern amongst asset owners varies, CIBC Mellon’s research suggests a collection of common themes facing the respondent firms, including:

  • Asset allocation: How are asset owners reallocating assets in response to short- and longer-term pressures?
  • Societal trends: How are pension funds responding to diverse stakeholder expectations related to the consideration (or not) of environmental, social and governance considerations to shape their investment decisions while protecting returns?
  • Living up to the revered “Canadian Model”: How will pension funds account for innovation and the desire to scale while staying true to the best practices they have been built on?

Join us to hear how Canadian asset owners are responding to rising market challenges and the many pressures facing pension plans in Canada.
